What Makes Sifu Kelly’s Tai Chi Different?

Sifu Martin Kelly combines traditional internal martial arts training with modern exercise science. His background in Exercise Science allows him to explain how Tai Chi movements affect the body, including:

  • which muscles and joints are engaged

  • how connective tissue is stimulated

  • how breathing regulates the nervous system

  • how posture affects balance and structural alignment

Sifu Kelly also teaches Tai Chi according to these traditional internal principles. His instruction emphasizes:

  • center-led movement from the dantian

  • whole-body coordination and structural alignment

  • breath and movement integration

  • understanding the functional applications of the form

With a background in Exercise Science, Sifu Kelly is also able to explain how these traditional principles affect muscles, joints, connective tissues, balance, and nervous system regulation.

By combining authentic lineage training with modern understanding of human movement, Sifu Kelly helps students experience Tai Chi as a complete internal art—supporting health, balance, internal awareness, and deeper understanding of the practice.

About Sifu Martin Kelly

Sifu Martin Kelly is a Tai Chi and Qigong instructor with decades of training in traditional internal martial arts and health practices. He has studied with respected masters including William C.C. Chen, Kenneth S. Cohen (Gao Han), Madame Gao Fu, B.P. Chan, Sensei Tsunako Miyake, and Grandmaster Jou Tsung-Hwa of Tai Ji Farm.

Sifu Kelly also has a background in Exercise Science, allowing him to explain how Tai Chi and Qigong movements affect muscles, joints, connective tissue, circulation, and nervous system function. His teaching integrates traditional martial arts lineage with modern understanding of health and body mechanics.

  • Authentic Tai Chi (Taiji Quan) is more than slow movement or memorizing a sequence of postures. It is a traditional Chinese internal martial art built on whole-body integration, center-led movement, coordinated breathing, and the cultivation of internal energy (qi). When practiced correctly, Tai Chi develops balance, structural alignment, mental focus, and internal awareness.

Whole-Body Movement Led From the Center

In authentic Tai Chi, the arms and legs do not move independently. Movement originates from the body’s center (dantian) and travels through the entire structure. The body moves as a connected unit, allowing energy, breath, and physical motion to work together.

    This principle creates:

    • efficient and relaxed movement

    • stronger balance and stability

    • better joint alignment and protection

    • coordinated whole-body power rather than isolated muscle effort

Tai Chi Has Layers of Practice

Authentic Tai Chi is taught in layers. At the beginning, students learn the external form and basic posture. As training deepens, practitioners begin to understand:

    • whole-body coordination

    • internal energy (qi) circulation

    • refined breathing and mental focus

    • structural alignment and internal connection

Over time, students learn how movement, breath, intention, and internal energy function together as one integrated system.

    Understanding Qi and Internal Movement

Tai Chi training also develops awareness of how qi moves through the body. Proper posture, relaxed structure, and coordinated breathing allow energy to circulate naturally through the body’s connective tissues and energetic pathways.

This internal development is one of the reasons Tai Chi has been valued for centuries for both health cultivation and martial arts training.

The Martial Arts Foundation of Tai Chi

Tai Chi is historically and technically a martial art. Understanding the martial function of the movements is essential because it teaches the correct biomechanics, timing, structure, and intention behind the postures.

Without understanding the martial applications, students may imitate the external shapes of the movements but miss the deeper functional principles that make Tai Chi effective.

However, learning the martial aspects does not mean students must learn to fight. (This is not part of the live online training, and for those who are interested in the martial aspects, they can join our Internal Martial Arts classes.)

Instead, martial applications help students understand:

    • how the body generates whole-body power

    • how weight shifting and structure work correctly

    • how intention and focus guide movement

    • how each movement in the form has a functional purpose

The movement mechanics used in martial applications are the same movement principles used for health, healing, and internal development.

In other words, the skills used to issue power in martial practice are the same internal skills that cultivate balance, energy flow, and coordinated movement in health-oriented Tai Chi training.
